Ecce Homo

Bulino originale mm 117 x 75

Bulino originale, monogrammato e datato in lastra; New Hollstein 50 II/III;               mm 117 x 75

The New Hollstein, Dutch & Flemish engravings, etchings and woodcuts 1450-1700, Rotterdam, 1996:

“He must have begun by scratching the main outlines of the scene with a needle before engraving it line for line in all details, using hatching for the shaded passages. The thin, sketchy lines of the initial design were generally obliterated by the engraved lines, but they can still be seen here and there in early impressions in areas where he departed from his preparatory sketch”(p. 9).

Egli arriva così ad ottenere una originale gamma di grigi “This intricate interplay of greys based on a medium grey tone imparts a “silvery” appearance to the print that was often regarded in the past as a hallmark of Lucas van Leyden’s finest impressions” (ivi, p.12).
